It has been known that Yahoo search algorithm probably not the best to find most relevant results but for sure it usually finds the MOST results. Three weeks after we first heard term SEOcontest2008 Yahoo is showing over 1.3 Million related search results. There is still over a month to go in the competition but looks like UKWW SEO Contest definitely caught attention among webmasters and SEO professionals.

Google has been kind of erratic with it's SEOcontest2008 SERPs gaining and dropping 30 to 50 thousand pages during the day but top 10 results begin to look more and more familiar. "Resonate" Carl Barker of Resonate Seo Consultancy has been near the top from the day one and still looking strong. Another page that moved up recently is seocontest2008.uk.com. Both sites, although not having high PR are well respected online by individuals and search engines, so it would certainly give beneficiaries a buzz.

Participation in this SEO contest has been "business as usual" for many professionals but also a good school for many beginners. Let's hope SEOcontest2008 will be good positive experience for both - contestants and organizers.

SEOcontest2008 - Two weeks later...

Today is exactly two weeks after targeted term for UK Webmaster World SEO Contest was announced and as you probably guessed the term is: SEOcontest2008.
Despite few little problems with few blogs being removed from the WordPress and later from Blogspot servers competition is gaining more and more popularity - new entries are still being submitted daily.

Now there are from 80 to 100 thousands results are being displayed on Google and over 700,000 on Yahoo related to SEOcontest2008. Even though new pages are moving up and down every hour some of them seem to be holding position near the top. Four of the leaders that have been on the first page for some time are: Resonate Seo, Kineticdc, Lanix.org, and dnseo.net. There is still over a month till the end of competition and it will be interesting to see if someone else will be able to join top quartet.

One recent entry caught my attention: Amanda Linch in her SEOcontest2008 participating page called competition "Ugly, seocontest2008 content filled spam"... Very interesting controversial approach which may actually help her blog to gain some rankings... Sure there is a lot of spamming going on on any SEO contest but time and time again professionals with legal techniques are ending up with the prize and new business gained thanks to worldwide exposure...

So... First two weeks of 2008 SEO contest are behind and tomorrow is the last day to update invalid registrations. Members who didn't read the rules before they submitted their entries and don't bother to visit UK Webmaster Forum for contest updates and important announcements are about to be disqualified. For those of you who are curious to test your SEO skills - there is no deadline for new SEOcontest2008 registration.

WordPress boycotts SEOcontest2008

One week after the start of international SEO contest on UK Webmaster Forum and some of participants are facing major problem - WordPress declared number of blogs related to the term SEOcontest2008 as spam, violating TOS and removed them from free hosting servers.
Now to continue competition for the $1000 prize affected webmasters will have to start all over again and optimize new pages.

I have been following SEOcontest2008 very closely and did see a lot of spamming going on, mostly on forums and blog comments. Some of the pages created with the sole purpose of black hat seo without any usable content on it, but two of the blogs that were deleted by Word press were actually pretty good quality and appeared on the first page of Google search results for the term SEOcontest2008.

This latest development just proves one more time - nothing in this life is free... WordPress has been known to lure people in offering free hosting and most popular blogging platform but when you try to do even basic customization they start nickel-and-dime you each and every possible way.

In first 7 days SEOcontest2008 has generated over ten thousands related pages found by Google and over 140 thousands pages in Yahoo search results.
There is still long way to go till the April 1st - the day competition ends. We can just wait and hope there will be no more major problems created for participants.

It's nothing more than a random combination of letters and numbers that has been chosen as a targeted search term for the SEO contest on UK Webmaster Forums.
To compete for the top prize of $1000 any member of UK Webmaster World can register new page on the Official SEO Contest site and than try to optimize that page for the targeted term - seocontest2008.

There has been a lot of interest among webmasters and new pages begun to show up on Google for the term seocontest2008 in less than half hour after it was announced at midnight yesterday.
Because of the time difference some of participants woke up in the morning just to find out that all top level domains and most of subdomains on free hosted blogs containing desired term SEOcontest2008 have been already taken.

Another interesting fact that Yahoo is still did not find any pages related to SEOcontest2008 and MSN Live search showing up just one single result.

To follow SEOcontest2008 UKWW programmers have created special SEO Contest Standings page which will retrieve Google search results for the term seocontest2008 and update standings for registered participants once a day.
